NORWEGIAN STAR SUCCESSFULLY
COMPLETES SEA TRIALS
MIAMI, Fl. - Oct. 26, 2001 -- Norwegian Star, Norwegian Cruise
Line's (NCL) second ship purpose built for Freestyle Cruising,
recently completed successful sea trials in the North Sea
near Papenburg, Germany at the Meyer Werft shipyard, where
she was built.
Norwegian Star, custom designed for the Hawaii market, is
NCL's fastest ship and measured a trial speed of well above
25 knots. According to the independent company conducting
the measurement, the vibration levels at this top speed were
the lowest they have ever measured on a ship of this type
and size.
Technicians and engineers from Meyer Werft and various contractors
tested the maneuverability, sailing ability and safety aspects
of the latest, most modern ship to enter the cruise industry.
During the trials, Norwegian Star completed a crash stop at
full speed, a full turn at full speed and many other operational
and navigational procedures.
"These sea trials are a vital aspect of testing Norwegian
Star's state-of-the-art navigational and propulsion systems,"
said Colin Veitch, president and Chief Executive Officer of
Norwegian Cruise Line. "We are excited about her maximum
speed and look forward to a bright future with her."
Beginning Dec. 16, 2001, the 91,000-ton, 2,220-passenger
Norwegian Star will offer weekly seven-day, year-round itineraries
round-trip from Honolulu, Oahu and Lahaina, Maui and is the
only modern ship to be deployed there year round.
Miami-based Norwegian Cruise Line is an international cruise
company and industry innovator that currently operates a fleet
of eight ships sailing to more than 200 ports around the world.
