Big Bands to Swing at Sea During Norwegian Cruise Line's Fall Big Band Music Theme Cruise

MIAMI, Fla., January 19, 1999-- Four of the country's most popular big bands will bring the nostalgic sounds of swing to sea aboard Norwegian Cruise Line's popular Big Band theme cruise, November 27-December 4, 1999. The lineup for this fall's cruise includes: The Artie Shaw Orchestra, Guy Lombardo's Royal Canadians, Tex Beneke and His Orchestra and The Terry Myers Orchestra.

Guests sailing on this year's special voyage will enjoy an array of activities including nightly performances, dance spectaculars out under the stars on Pool Deck; a "Meet the Stars" interview session and autograph signings; Big Band quiz contests for prizes; a free-of-charge jukebox programmed with 100 favorite Big Band CD's and an in-stateroom video channel featuring period movies. On days when the ship is at sea, the Norway will offer an almost non-stop selection of Big Band performances from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m.

In addition, a group of specially-selected gentlemen dance hosts will be on board to serve as dance partners for female guests. A variety of daily group classes will also be offered in all types of Big Band dancing.

Following are the Big Bands scheduled to swing during this memorable cruise:

  • The Artie Shaw Orchestra conducted by Dick Johnson-- 1999 marks the 62nd anniversary of Artie Shaw's first successful big band. The group's first release for Bluebird Records, the combination of Begin the Beguine and Indian Love Call, is now an all-time classic.

  • Guy Lombardo's Royal Canadians with Al Pierson-- One of the most popular big bands of all time was that of Guy Lombardo. Countless people remember with nostalgia, the tradition of Lombardo at the Waldora Astoria and his rendition of Auld Lang Syne on New Year's Eve. In 1989, Al Pierson took up the baton of the famed band leader and takes this band to sea.

  • Tex Beneke and His Orchestra-- Perhaps the most famous soloist in the original Glenn Miller Orchestra, Beneke was the first leader of the Glenn Miller Orchestra after World War II and has been a celebrated leader on his own for over 50 years.

  • The Terry Myers Orchestra-- Myers and his band will perform "A Tribute to Benny Goodman" with an array of hits and favorites. Myers admits to being a "late-bloomer," embarking on a full-time musical career at the age of 40, and making waves ever since.

The Norway sails from Miami to St. Maarten, St. John, St. Thomas and Great Stirrup Cay, NCL's private island in the Bahamas. Cruise-only fares for the Big Band cruise start at $722 per person, based on double occupancy, including port charges. All performers subject to change without notice For reservations or information contact a travel agent or call NCL in the U.S. and Canada at 1-800-327-7030; in Dade County, Fla., at 305-436-0866.
