Norwegian Cruise Line Introduces First-Ever "Smooth Jazz" Cruise NOVEMBER 6-13, 1999

Miami, Fla., January 27, 1999-- Some of the smoothest sounds on the high seas will be heard during Norwegian Cruise Line’s first-ever "Smooth Jazz" cruise, as musicians including The Rippingtons featuring Russ Freeman, pianist Keiko Matsui, guitarist Ken Navarro, saxophonist Kirk Whalum and more perform for guests on this new theme cruise, November 6-13, 1999.

The setting for this cruise, the legendary S/S Norway, will combine great performances with a vacation to Western Caribbean ports of call including: Cozumel, Mexico; Ocho Rios, Jamaica; and Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island in the Bahamas.

Fans will enjoy live ‘Smooth Jazz’ performances in the ship’s showrooms and lounges, jazz videos, an autograph signing session, 24-hour CD jukebox, and a "Smooth Jazz" radio channel in guest staterooms.

The following artists are scheduled to perform:
The Rippingtons featuring Russ Freeman-- This group broke new ground more than 11 years ago with the release of their first album, Moonlighting, chosen by Jazziz’ magazine as the most influential album in the history of contemporary jazz. The group’s explosive live performances, combined with Freeman’s perfect melodies, have brought the acclaim of "Smooth Jazz" fans throughout the world.

Keiko Matsui-- Keiko Matsui began her rise to prominence at the age of five, in her hometown of Tokyo, and has achieved world-wide recognition today in a musical genre where few women succeed. Five of her eight past CD’s have been Top 10 and four Top 20 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz charts. Her recent CD, Dream Walk, surpassed the 200,000 mark, making her Billboard’s #1 independent contemporary jazz artist.

Ken Navarro-- Ken Navarro is recognized as one of today’s leading contemporary jazz guitarists. His impressive list of chart-topping albums and widespread radio airplay are a testament to his appeal to a wide range of listeners. After nine studio albums, he broke new ground last year with the release of a live album, Ablaze in Orlando.

Kirk Whalum-- Kirk Whalum started on the road that would lead him to jazz distinction in Memphis, where he played in his father’s church choir. Whalum signed with Columbia Records and released five albums for the label, three of which were produced by Bob James. In 1996, Joined At The Hip, produced with James, was nominated for a Grammy.

Craig Chaquico-- Guitarist/songwriter Craig Chaquico went straight from high school to join a world-renowned rock band, Jefferson Starship. Sixteen years later his first solo album sold over 500,000 solo albums and earned a Grammy nomination.

Denny Jiosa-- Jiosa is one of the smoothest, most soulful contemporary jazz guitarists currently performing. His debut album, Moving Pictures, went to the Top 10 on the national NAC (New Adult Contemporary) and Smooth Jazz radio charts, while his second release, Inner Voices, went Top 5. Jiosa is currently writing and recording a special project for the new millennium.

Marcus Johnson-- Although only 26 years old, this self-taught musician is a determined self-starter who combines his unique musical talent with a law degree and Master’s in Business Administration from Georgetown University.

Paul Taylor-- Taylor knew at the age of seven that he was destined to become a saxophonist. Inspired by a diverse range of artists and musical styles, Taylor’s passionate style and insight into human emotions and experiences adds color and depth to live performances. His debut album, On the Horn, was on top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Chart for almost a year.

Khani Cole-- Cole’s 1997 debut album Piece Of My Soul, launched her into national prominence. With her four-and-a-half octave range and sultry manner, Cole garnered critical acclaim from all areas of the music industry. Cole and her band toured and played over 280 dates in 1997, including appearances with The Rippingtons, Earl Klugh and Lee Ritenour.

Indigo City-- The original members of this band came together to form a very special Smooth Jazz delegation with their first CD Samba Electrique. The group is featured nationally on the weekly radio program, "Sounds of Brazil" originating from WNUA/Chicago.

Grady Nichols-- This extraordinary saxophonist has recorded two successful Smooth Jazz CD’s which led to six singles on Smooth Jazz radio stations across the country. His defining style recently earned him a 26-week run on the nationally-televised "Sunday Night Live" on the Black Entertainment Network.

Robin Crow-- Crow joined his first band while he was in the seventh grade and by the time he finished high school, he was making a full-time career as a musician. One of the world’s most innovative guitarists, Robin Crow has forged an extraordinary career releasing seven albums, performing over 2,000 concerts and appearing on dozens of television shows.

Cruise-only fares start at $702 per person, based on double occupancy, including port charges. Performers are subject to change without notice.
