Sports Greats Set To Sail Aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Second Annual Sports Illustrated Afloat Cruise

Legendary S/S Norway Sails the Caribbean with Sports Legends on Special December 4-11, 1999, Cruise

MIAMI, Fla., March 23, 1999-- A stellar lineup of sports greats will hit the high seas aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s legendary S/S Norway for the Second Annual Sports Illustrated Afloat cruise, departing December 4, 1999.

Sports fans will meet their heroes, both past and present, and enjoy a myriad of onboard activities as they sail from Miami to the Eastern Caribbean islands of St. Maarten, St. John’s, St. Thomas, and Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private island in the Bahamas.

Guests will go one-on-one with sports legends including baseball’s Ozzie Smith and Tom Glavine. Smith is a former St. Louis Cardinal who holds 13 consecutive Gold Glove Awards and played for the National League All-Star team 15 times. Atlanta Braves’ pitcher Glavine has won two Cy Young Awards, in 1991 and 1998, and has been selected to three All-Star teams. Sports fans can talk hockey with Hall of Fame athlete Rod Gilbert, who played for the New York Rangers for 16 years, and with Cam Neely who played for the Boston Bruins for 13 years. Basketball enthusiasts will meet former Los Angeles Laker James Worthy, selected as one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history. WNBA star and Olympic medalist Teresa Weatherspoon will talk about playing on the 1988 and 1992 U.S. Olympic teams and her current success with the New York Liberty. She will be joined by fellow WNBA All-Star Sheryl Swoopes of the two-time championship team, Houston Comets.

Track and Field star Al Joyner will be the Master of Ceremony for the cruise and will discuss what it was like to win a gold medal in the triple jump at the 1984 Olympic Games---the first American in 80 years to win a gold medal in the triple jump.

More athletes will be added to the lineup over the next few months.
The ultimate sports experience at sea, the SI Afloat cruise brings together active and armchair athletes alike. During the day guests may receive pitching and batting instruction, have their golf swing analyzed, shoot hoops with stars and slam dunk balls on the Norway’s full-size basketball court, test their football skills against pro football stars or participate in a slap shot tournament. Guests will also have the opportunity to meet sports icons, participate in lectures, chalk-talks, Q & A sessions, autograph sessions, and compete in sports trivia contests.

"Guests on board the Sports Illustrated Afloat cruise, will not only enjoy NCL’s outstanding cruise experience featuring outstanding dining, service and entertainment, but will also have the opportunity to interact with world-class sports greats," stated Nina Cohen, Vice President of Marketing of Norwegian Cruise Line.

Sports Illustrated Café
The Sports Illustrated Café, unveiled aboard the Norway last December, has become a sports fans’ paradise for relaxing and socializing amidst treasured memorabilia, videos, and classic SI photography. This themed lounge features large screen televisions ideal for watching live events and CNN/SI -the 24 hour sports network. Additionally, NCL’s existing Sports Bars on its other ships are also slated to be converted into SI Cafés in the coming years.

The Norway: NCL’s Flagship
With its variety of state-of-the-art sports and fitness facilities, the Norway is the perfect site for the SI Afloat cruise. The last of the 1,000-foot ocean liners in service today, the Norway features a 6,000-square-foot Roman Spa which includes 16 treatment rooms, cardiovascular exercise equipment, sauna, massage, aquacise pool, and Jacuzzi; a 360-degree outdoor promenade for jogging or walking; full court basketball; volleyball; golf driving net; and a 4,000-square-foot Fitness Center.

Cruise-only fares for the SI Afloat cruise start at $819 per person, based on double occupancy, including port charges. Participants are subject to change without notice.
