Guests Are Transported from Southampton to Miami; on Journey through Time, Back to the Legendary Age of Jazz and Swing

MIAMI, Fla., May 13, 1999 -- Norwegian Cruise Line has announced a unique summertime transatlantic cruise aboard the legendary S/S Norway, "The Romance of Music," August 8-21, 1999, taking guests from Southampton, England to Miami, Florida while transporting them to the days of musical romance – the Age of Jazz and Swing.

While guests take in the refreshing breezes of the Atlantic Ocean, they will enjoy a host of fine musical entertainment, with legendary stars of the Jazz Age making their ocean-faring experience a memorable journey through time.

Music fans on this special sailing will enjoy daily shipboard entertainment, evenings and afternoons, and are invited to bring their own instruments from home to participate in impromptu jam sessions. In addition to great music, autograph sessions and a "Meet the Stars" Q & A gathering are scheduled.

The following entertainers will be "on-deck" to provide the romantic sounds of Jazz and Swing:

  • Les Brown and His Band of Renown, one of the longest-lasting musical organizations in the history of pop music, has been in existence since 1940 and continues to this day. The band skyrocketed to fame with its song "Sentimental Journey," once featuring Doris Day as vocalist.

  • The Gerry Mulligan All-Star Tribute Band, with pianist Ted Rosenthal, honors jazz legend, Gerry Mulligan, whose career spanned five decades making him one of the major innovators of modern jazz history. (Also: the Gerry Mulligan Rhythm Section, featuring Dean Johnson on bass and Ron Vincent on drums.)

  • Bob Brookmeyer – this world-renowned trombonist has performed with several Gerry Mulligan groups over the past four decades, and his talents for performing, composing, arranging and conducting have continued in jazz as well as in classical music.

  • Nick Brignola -- widely considered the preeminent baritone saxophonist in jazz today, Brignola has been recently voted Number One player in readers’ polls by Down Beat and Jazz Times.

  • Randy Brecker -- rounding out the frontline is this international recording artist and Grammy Award-winning trumpeter.

  • Corky Hale -- whose musical accomplishments have spanned from playing harp with Liberace, piano with Billie Holiday, and has accompanied such artists as Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, James Brown, Peggy Lee, Roberta Flack, plus alternative diva Bjork and Latin band Santana.

In addition to these performers, this cruise will feature noted maritime author and lecturer John Maxtone Graham; a certified director of the American Contract Bridge League to host games and tournament play; and gentlemen dance hosts.

Described as one of the most legendary cruise ships afloat, the Norway features a two-story Broadway-style theater with excellent acoustics, Roman Spa, fitness center, boutiques and selection of eateries including the Sports Illustrated Café and traditional

a la carte dining, all of which makes cruising "the Norwegian Way" a special experience.
