Norwegian Cruise Line Unveils Presidential
Millennium Menu Program Developed By Legendary Chef Henry
Haller
Former White House Executive Chef Premiers
"Presidents Menu" Series in Fall 1999 for
U.S. Inaugural Sailing of M/S Norwegian Sky
MIAMI, Fla., June 4, 1999 -- Norwegian Cruise Line today
announced the introduction of a special partnership with Chef
Henry Haller, former White House executive chef whose culinary
innovations spanned some five presidential administrations
for over 20 years.
Chef Haller will create a special "Presidents
Menu," part of NCLs new "Millennium Menu"
initiative, to be introduced this November in conjunction
with the Norwegian Skys inaugural season. The entire
dinner menu will consist of distinguished dishes and prized
recipes served during Hallers years at the White House.
The menu will be offered to guests on one special evening
aboard all NCL cruises of seven days or more, and will feature
a commemorative cover with a photograph of Chef Haller posing
in front of the White House.
"We are delighted to welcome Chef Haller to the NCL
family, and are honored to present our guests with some of
the same culinary creations that were savored by United States
Presidents Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter and Reagan,"
said Art Sbarsky, executive vice president of Norwegian Cruise
Line. "Our partnership with Chef Haller is part of NCLs
ongoing commitment to provide guests with one of the worlds
finest culinary experiences at sea."
"I am thrilled to share some of my favorite dishes and
presentations with NCL guests, who will enjoy many of the
same delicacies and preparations experienced by world leaders,
from royalty to heads of state," said Haller.
Hallers involvement as NCL consulting chef will begin
this September, as he plans to oversee the Norwegian Skys
momentous inaugural celebration in New York.
Currently preparing a wide selection of special menus for
NCL cruises, Haller will serve as featured celebrity chef
aboard select cruises, joining guests to discuss his colorful
White House experiences. He will make occasional guest appearances,
including special presentations at NCL-sponsored sales promotions
and travel industry seminars.
Among the celebrated White House guests Haller has served
are: Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, King Hussein, President
Anwar Sadat of Egypt, King Juan Carlos of Spain, Prince Charles
and Princess Diana, Warren Beatty, Cary Grant, George Harrison,
Ginger Rodgers, Ralph Lauren, Estee Lauder, Hank Aaron, Arnold
Palmer, I.M. Pei, Audrey Hepburn and Clint Eastwood.
Haller can share numerous First Family tidbits garnered from
more than two decades in the White House. For example, President
Ford requested that the sugar bowl be removed from the dining
table as a symbol of support for public protest against inflated
sugar prices. Amy Carters favorite sandwich for school
lunch was cold meat loaf on white bread, which she carried
in a paper bag. President Reagan had a sweet tooth that went
beyond jellybeans. His favorite dessert was old-fashioned
Floating Islands.
Haller was summoned to the White House in 1966 by Lady Bird
Johnson, and enjoyed his role as executive chef, the first
households most senior culinary post. A native of Switzerland,
Haller attended the renowned Hotel Training School in Lucerne
and completed culinary apprenticeships at various Swiss hotels
including the famed Park Hotel in Davos. Prior to his White
House tenure, Haller served as executive chef at exclusive
hotels, both in New York and Canada.
"The collaboration between Chef Haller and Gerd Hertel,
Norwegian Cruise Lines executive chef, will result in
some truly extraordinary dining experiences for our guests,"
said Werner Neuteufel, senior vice president of hotel operations.
