Norwegian Dream Involved In Collision In English Channel

August 24, 1999-- At about 1:00 AM BST this morning (8 PM EDT), the 50,760-ton cruise ship M/S Norwegian Dream was involved in a collision with a cargo ship as the two vessels were maneuvering in the shipping lanes of the English Channel. Approximately 1,748 guests and 614 crewmembers were on board the Norwegian Dream at the time. About 20 guests and eight crewmembers were treated by the ship’s doctor for minor injuries. No serious injuries were reported and no one was airlifted off the ship.

The vessel was en route to Dover, England, at the conclusion of a 12-day "Scandinavian Capitals" cruise. The officers and the crew of the Norwegian Dream handled the situation according to procedures, and the guests, crew and ship were not in danger at any time. The cruise ship arrived in port under its own power at about 6:30 AM and normal debarkation procedures took place.

NCL is fully cooperating in an investigation with authorities to determine the cause of the accident. The Norwegian Dream incurred damage to its bow and starboard bridge wing and an assessment is currently underway concerning necessary repairs.

Norwegian Cruise Line has cancelled today’s scheduled 12-day "Scandinavian Capitals" cruise and is assessing whether future voyages will be affected.

Guests on today’s cancelled sailing have the option to stay on board the ship tonight with full meal service, entertainment and complimentary beverages provided as well as a credit for phone charges. NCL representatives are currently on board the vessel assisting guests with alternate travel arrangements.

All guests on today’s cancelled cruise will receive a full refund for this 12-day cruise and a certificate for one free, future Norwegian Cruise Line cruise, including Millennium voyages, based on similar stateroom category, up to the fare paid for this cancelled sailing. Guests will also be reimbursed for reasonable out-of-pocket expenses related to the cancelled cruise.

Travel agent commissions are being fully protected and NCL will provide all travel agents with clients on the cancelled August 24 voyage, a $75.00 per person fee for the re-booked cruise.

As a gesture of goodwill to all guests who were on the August 12 cruise when the incident occurred, NCL will provide a $300 per person future cruise credit certificate, which can be applied to any Norwegian Cruise Line voyage including Millennium sailings.

Guests or travel agents with questions concerning the status of the Norwegian Dream can call 1-800-634-8000 for an update.
